What is it about?
Catering Care is an HKU-based student initiative that aims to build a resilient and sustainable food partnership between the catering industry, food-insecure populations, and public sponsorship. Founded in August 2020, the project finds its roots in a fervent desire to support the vulnerable population in the immediate neighbourhood around HKU as well as campus restaurants, both of which have been severely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Since its piloting stage in September 2020, we have donated 490 meals from our campus restaurants Bijas and UDeli to the beneficiaries of St. Barnabas’ Society and Home.
Why did we start?
No one has ever become poor by giving.
-- Anne Frank
The Covid-19 crisis has heavily impacted the small catering businesses and homeless population. Not only has the pandemic caused immense suffering for the community, it has also exposed the fragility of the systems in our society when it comes to food security for the marginalized and the resilience of small caterers. In this moment of uncertainty and distress, the desire to give, care and share has never been stronger.
